2003 Common Wealth Award Winners

The Spotswood Garden Club of Harrisonburg is the winner of the 2003 Common Wealth Award.  The club received $4,000, and these funds will be used for the construction of “healing gardens” for Camp Still Meadows.  The camp is a non-profit special needs camp for mentally and physically disabled children and adults. The “healing gardens” will be designed as a series of raised permanent stone planting terraces with easily accessible planting areas to allow the campers, including the blind and those in wheelchairs, to experience the joy, the learning, and the restorative benefits of fruit, flower and vegetable gardening.

The Garden Club of Danville was a finalist and is one of two runner-ups for the 2003 Common Wealth Award.  The club received $1,000.  The Garden Club of Danville wishes to enhance the Grand Entrance to The Crossing at the Dan, a site of impressive revitalization which attracts thousands of visitors, including more than 15,000 students, who enjoy varied educational, shopping and entertainment opportunities.

The James River Garden Club of Richmond was a finalist and is also a runner-up of the 2003 Common Wealth Award.  The club received $1,000.  The club wishes to restore a healthy tree canopy to the historic section of Monument Avenue.  Their project is a multi-phased initiative to identify missing and unhealthy trees, and start a replacement program that will result in a renewal of the graceful natural forms that act as a central ingredient of this impressive street.

Congratulations to the winner and to the two runner-ups of The 2003 Common Wealth Award.
