2004 Common Wealth Award Winners

By Grace A. Rice, GCV Director of Public Relations, Augusta Garden Club

The Garden Club of Virginia presented the Common Wealth Award to Bandy Field Nature Park, Richmond, project sponsored by The Boxwood Garden Club and The Tuckahoe Garden Club of Westhampton at the Board of Governors Meeting held in Front Royal, October 2004.

The $5,000 award will be used by the two sponsoring clubs to inform students as well as the broader community regarding wetlands and natural habitats through educational programs, materials and signage.  This includes conducting Field & Teacher Days, providing Ecology Boxes to local schools, installing permanent signage and maps depicting locations of habitats and trails as well as features of special interest, and educating and training volunteers to develop and conduct environmental programs for all ages.  The classroom Ecology Boxes will have educational material specific to the ecology of Bandy Field wetlands, woodlands, and butterfly preserves.  Field & Teacher Days will be developed in coordination with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

The Charlottesville Garden Club was presented with a $2,000 Common Wealth Award to expand the content and technical capabilities of its web site, "Gardening in Virginia".  This site contains extensive information and, through its "Gardening on the Web" page, provides links to many Virginia and national web sites relating to gardening and horticulture.  It also provides the opportunity for gardeners to share their expertise with others.
