Gunston Hall

Fairfax County, VA  22079

Recreation of George Mason's extensive garden, with boxwood definition and appropriate plantings of the surrounding grounds. Internal plantings within the garden are conjectural, using appropriate plant material. The Virginia State Highway Department cooperated when huge boxwoods were moved to Gunston Hall from rural Rockbridge County. Nine feet tall, weighing more than the five-ton limit for some country bridges, the boxwoods were transported at night over a route plotted and tested by the Highway Department, with bridges shored up where necessary.
